About Bismarck
Bismarck is the capital city of North Dakota. It's centrally located in the state and bordered on the west by the scenic Missouri River. Bismarck's population wasabout 59,500 in 2007. Add in Mandan & Lincoln and the population rises to about 80,000.
The Bismarck Public School District has been in the education business for over 125 years (since 1873). The first graduating class was in 1887, when two people graduated. In 2003, 826 students graduated. The oldest building is part of BHS, built in 1934, and the newest building is Horizon Middle School, which opened in January 2001.
We are the largest school districts in the state, with 10,717 students in 2008-09 and 1,640 staff members. We have over 500 classrooms in fifteen grade schools, three middle schools, two senior high schools, an alternative high school, a career and technical center, and an early childhood program.
Our drop-out rate in 2007-2008 was 1.9%, or 47 students, and the average daily attendance was 96.5%. All of our schools are "accredited with commendation" by the North Dakota Department of Public Instruction and North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. Some schools have received "Blue Ribbon" awards, a high national honor.
High school graduation requires 22 credits 2009 and 24 by 2012. Over 20% of students in grades 10-12 are members of the National Honor Society, and 25% of the seniors are Presidential Academic Fitness Award winners, maintaining an A- or higher GPA and score at the 85th percentile or above on a national achievement test.

KFYR (550 AM kHz) is a radio station located in Bismarck, North Dakota owned by Clear Channel Communications. It transmits on a 5,000 watt signal that can be heard in seven U.S. states and three Canadian provinces.
Because of it's location near the end of the AM band and because of North Dakota's flat landscape it can be heard in five states and two Canadian provinces. It has the largest land coverage area in the United States of any AM radio station during daytime hours.
KFYR began playing ethnic German Oom-pah music until sometime in the early 1960s, when it switched to popular and oldies format. It was very popular with teenagers by virtue of its "torrid twenty" countdown show which featured the twenty popular hits of the week. It was revamped in the late 1990s and since then has broadcast a variety of programming, with news and talk radio during the day, and classic rock and oldies music during the evening.
