2 proposed BPS school calendars for 2009-10

PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!

Schools in North Dakota must create a 180-day calendar which includes 173 days of classroom instruction. In Bismarck, we pay teachers for 186 days because we believe it's important to provide 6 staff development days to improve our educational system.

In addition to the 173 days of student instruction, teachers must, by state law, receive 3 paid holidays, 2 days off to make up for overtime during parent teacher conferences, and 2 days for professional development. There may be no school in October during the NDEA teacher's convention, though our teachers are not paid to attend because we offer our own staff development.

In addition, state law says schools may not be in session on:
New Year's Day
Good Friday
Memorial Day
Fourth of July (summer school)
Labor Day
Veteran's Day
Thanksgiving Day
Christmas Day

Here are the days we could eliminate from our school calendar:

Day after Thanksgiving: however, we believe families want this day off.
The days between Christmas Day and New Year's Day: same as above.
Martin Luther King Day: state and federal employees have this day off and, from a cultural standpoint, we also feel we should honor this day.
Spring Break: however, students and teachers often need a break in the spring, depending on where Easter falls on the calendar.

You can now review the proposed calendars, then vote for one below.

Find Your School

We encourage parents and students to use Transfinderi to determine which schools a particular address is assigned to. When you type in the address, put the house number first, then the street name, then the direction. Do not use punctuation.

Example: 1009 1st St N instead of 1009 N. 1st St.

If you have difficulty using transfinderi, call 323-4502.
